American Airlines added 15 gates with capacity for 100 daily flights at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in one of the most significant expansions in U.S. aviation this century.
Adding this number of gates in today's aviation world is rare. For reference, Dallas Love Field operates 20 gates in its entirety.
"If I recall, this is the first growth of this kind since 9/11," said Cedric Rockamore, American’s vice president of DFW, at a ribbon-cutting event Thursday. "I mean, over 100 flights a day, 15 gates — as you know gates are a premium. It's hard to get into airports and find gates."
About a year after the project was formally announced, American Airlines Group Inc. (Nasdaq: AAL) will host flights out of the Terminal E satellite starting Friday.
The flights will be regional routes operated by wholly owned subsidiary Envoy Air Inc. Together, American and Envoy have hired about 450 new employees to support the expansion at DFW.
The addition of 15 gates will help support growth for American at DFW, its largest hub and the second-largest airline hub in the world after Delta Air Lines, Inc. (NYSE: DAL) in Atlanta. American has more than 85 percent market share at DFW.
In total, American will fly 900 daily flights out of DFW Airport starting in June. American is growing the fastest at its two largest hubs (Charlotte is the other), according to Dallas Business Journal research.
Terminal B adjustments
Amrican will move some regional flights previously flown out of Terminal B to the Terminal E satellite. The carrier will then convert eight gates in Terminal B into six mainline gates. The number of gates at Terminal B has to be reduced to allow for larger aircraft.

Travelers won't know they're flying out of a satellite facility, apart from the walk from Terminal E through a tunnel located near gate E21. To accommodate the walk, American added 10 minutesto connecting routes flown out of gates E22-E30 in the Terminal E satellite.
'Otherwise it's just sitting here'
In August 2017, JetBlue, United and Air Canada were the last carriers to fly out of the Terminal E satellite, which was originally constructed in the 1980s.
For years, the Terminal E satellite was used as a placeholder for airlines when their gates were undergoing construction in the main terminals. The concept is similar to a small detour road being built when construction of the main road is ongoing.
"American really saw an opportunity with the gates being here to (revitalize) the facility," said Chad Makovsky, executive vice president of Operations at DFW Airport. "That allows them to really take advantage of an under-utilized asset at DFW. We're really excited about it, because otherwise it's just sitting here getting no use."

Grand Traverse Plaza has welcomed a famed barbecue restaurant to the shopping center near Brownwood.
Dickey’s Barbecue Pit has opened just a few doors down from Flipper’s Pizzeria at the shopping plaza located within Wildwood on State Road 44.
The menu features beef brisket, pulled pork, St. Louis style ribs, polish sausage, spicy cheddar sausage, smoked turkey and marinated chicken, with an extensive array of homestyle sides from jalapeño beans to macaroni and cheese. Buttery rolls are served with every meal, along with complementary ice cream. Children eat free on Sundays.
In 1941, Travis Dickey, a World War II veteran, opened the first Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Dallas. Dickey was a true Texas character, blessed with the gift of gab and the love of authentic, slow-smoked barbecue.
Brothers Roland and T.D. Dickey took over the business in 1967, continuing their father’s legacy of quality, hickory-smoked signature meats.
Today there are more than 500 Dickey’s locations in 44 states.

"It is designed to reward our guests for making purchases at Dickey's locations nationwide, sharing their experiences with us and ultimately providing information to best serve them moving forward."
Guests can download the app through the Apple App Store or Google Play and create a Big Yellow Cup Club Rewards account by signing in through email, Facebook, Twitter or Google. Guests can also access the rewards program via the concept's website, according to the release.

The Halls come from a medical background. Don is an ultrasound technician and Barbara is a registered nurse.
&nbsp;“We looked for some kind of franchise for 10 years before we settled on Dickey’s Barbecue Pit," said Barbara Hall.
“I was in restaurant management for 15 years before I became a nurse, so this is second nature to me. Our only concern was where to put the restaurant. We didn’t want to be in an industrial or downtown area. We wanted to be in a neighborhood. Hardin Valley is perfect for us. It’s a place where we can grow with the community. We love it here.

Dickeys was started by Roland Dickey in Dallas in 1941 as a family-owned BBQ joint.
“Dickey’s is the new No. 1 franchise in the world. They’re even opening up one in Abu Dhabi which offers lamb," Barbara said.
The pulled pork shoulder sandwich is the Happy Hour sandwich at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. The sandwich is $3 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Keto diet choice: Jalapeno cheddar sausage &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Pulled pork shoulder sandwiches are the restaurant’s claim to fame. Smoked beef brisket, chicken, turkey, and kielbasa sausage are also available. Jalapeno cheddar sausage is wildly popular with Keto dieters. "It’s very low carb. You can get any of our meats on a bun or without."
The meats are smoked fresh daily. "There’s something for everyone."
The sandwiches and plates come plain with two sides, but customers can jazz it up with Dickey’s secret sauce, which comes in original or sweet and spicy. The sauce is available to take home for $4.95 a bottle.

Needing a Fresh Start for Technology
To survive and thrive in the competitive restaurant industry, the Dickey’s leadership team knew they needed both better data and better ways to use data to understand customer wants and needs. The company didn’t feel it was managing its data optimally through its on-premises environment. It also felt it wouldn’t be able to scale to respond to growth opportunities. Dickey’s saw a massive opportunity in starting over and building a technology and data roadmap that began with building a cloud-based business intelligence (BI) platform. For Dickey’s, analytics-first became the company mantra. &nbsp;
Re-Inventing Dickey’s Through Data
Dickey’s chose to work closely with iOLAP from the beginning to build and execute a cloud-based data and architecture strategy. For its new environment, the company chose to build on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The breadth of AWS services available, security posture, scalability, and ability to align spend to anticipated consumption made AWS the obvious choice for Dickey’s. The company began by building a data warehouse on Amazon Redshift. Dickey’s uploads data regularly to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), processes the data through Amazon Redshift, and uses AWS Lambda to provide real-time analytics for its sales data, labor data, and a growing number of sources. On AWS, new data source integrations take days instead of weeks to implement. Today, Dickey’s is using Yellowfin’s BI platform running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). &nbsp;
Analytics is Just the Beginning
Using AWS, Dickey’s can grow and scale on-demand at a fraction of the cost of its on-premises environment. The company’s three-year total cost of ownership (TCO) is 54 percent cheaper than a comparable on-premises solution. Working with iOLAP and using AWS, Dickey’s has built a vendor-agnostic framework allowing for customization and the flexibility to build its own proprietary tooling. The company has now digitized everything it does through its CRM running on AWS, which the company believes is contributing to the growth of its catering business line. With the successful launch of the platform on AWS, Dickey’s and iOLAP have begun to tackle new innovations and projects. A key focus for the team is the implementation of a voice-enabled Amazon Alexa system which will fundamentally change the way customers and internal teams interact with the restaurant.
